Located in Eastern Serbia, Mount Rtanj rises to 1,565 metres at its highest peak, Šiljak.

From the top, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views stretching across the surrounding landscape.

The most popular hiking season generally runs from spring through autumn. Winter ascents can involve significantly more demanding conditions and are best suited to experienced and properly equipped hikers.

The Ruins of St. George’s Chapel

At the summit of Šiljak stand the ruins of the Chapel of St. George, one of Rtanj’s most recognisable landmarks.

The chapel was built in the 1930s by the family connected with the former Rtanj mine. It was later severely damaged by treasure hunters searching for legendary gold supposedly hidden beneath the mountain.

Today, its ruins remain at the summit — another place where the documented history and mythology of Rtanj meet.

Visiting Mount Rtanj

Rtanj is located in Eastern Serbia, roughly 200 kilometres from Belgrade, with Sokobanja, Boljevac and several smaller villages providing access to the surrounding region.

The mountain can be reached by road from both Belgrade and Niš, while hiking routes begin from several points around its base.

Spring, summer and early autumn offer the most accessible conditions for exploring the area.

Visitors can combine a trip to Rtanj with nearby destinations including Sokobanja, Boljevac, Zaječar and the monasteries and historical sites of Eastern Serbia.

Pyramid Festival and Mount Rtanj

At the foot of Rtanj, in the small village of Ilino, lies Pyramid Eco Village and the home of Pyramid Festival.
